Job words explained
What the words on job listings mean, in plain language. Ask the employer or your recruiter if anything on a listing is still unclear.
- CTC (cost to company)
- Everything the employer spends on you in a year: salary, PF the company pays, bonuses and other benefits. Your take-home pay is less than the CTC.
- LPA (lakhs per annum)
- Pay for a year, in lakhs of rupees. 3 LPA is ₹3,00,000 a year, about ₹25,000 a month before deductions.
- In-hand salary
- What reaches your bank account each month, after PF, tax and other deductions.
- PF (Provident Fund) and ESI
- PF is retirement savings: part of your salary, and the employer adds the same. ESI is health insurance for lower-paid workers. Both are deducted from pay where they apply.
- Notice period
- How long you must keep working at your current job after you resign, before you can start a new one.
- Full-time, part-time and contract
- Full-time is a regular job, usually 8–9 hours a day. Part-time is fewer hours. Contract work is for a fixed time, often through an agency.
- Daily wage / gig
- Paid by the day or by the task, often without a fixed monthly salary.
- Shift
- The hours you work. A night shift is overnight; a rotational shift changes from week to week.
- On-site, hybrid and remote
- On-site means you work at the workplace every day. Hybrid is some days at the workplace and some at home. Remote is from home.
- Walk-in interview
- Go to the address on the given day and time without booking. Take your documents and a copy of your resume.
- Fresher
- Someone looking for their first job, with no work experience yet.
- Probation
- The first few months of a job, when the employer and you check that the job is a good fit.
- Openings
- How many people the employer wants to hire for this job.
A genuine employer never asks you for money, an OTP, a UPI PIN or your bank password to apply or to get a job.
