Sales interview tips

Sales interviews look for confidence and results. Come ready with numbers from your past work, even small ones.

What to bring

  • Resume
  • Aadhaar and PAN card
  • Proof of past targets or incentives, if you have it
  • Two-wheeler licence, if it is a field sales job

And the usual: a photo ID with a photocopy, your resume if you have one, and two passport-size photos.

Questions they often ask

What was your last target, and did you meet it?

Give the target and what you achieved. If you missed it, say why and what you changed.

How will you find new customers?

Talk about visiting shops, calling leads, asking happy customers for references and following up.

Sell me this product.

Ask a few questions about what they need, then explain the benefit, not just the features.

How do you handle rejection?

Say you take it calmly, learn from it and move to the next customer.

Good questions to ask

  • How is the incentive worked out, and when is it paid?
  • Is travel allowance given for field visits?
  • What is the target in the first three months?

For any interview

The basics, from the day before to the offer letter: how to get ready for a job interview.

Stay safe

  • Never pay anyone to get an interview or a job: no registration fee, no training fee, no uniform deposit.
  • Never hand over your original documents to keep. Showing them is fine; they can keep photocopies.
  • Don't share OTPs, bank PINs or passwords. No real employer needs them.
  • Go to interviews at an office or a public place in the daytime, and tell someone where you are going.
